Day 1 of the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival chalk mural is complete! The theme for the festival this year is Ride the Wave.
I created a very literal mural of a surfer dude... riding a wave. Of course, I added fun elements; a ocean floor with fish, a beach with huts and a beautiful mountain/dormant volcano. I will let you know that for a moment while chalking I felt like I was really there... Then I realized it was that small (but effective) beam of sunlight burning my right arm... SO, tomorrow I will wear more sunscreen! I just LOVE how this day turned out. The chalk watchers were great! I even had a very young one educate me on all the fishies I was drawing... I had no clue, I just thought they were pretty! Future Marine Biologist that one is! Looking forward to tomorrow! Let's cross are fingers for some nice weather like we had today. :)

It's that time of the year again! Festivals are overtaking the calendar! I decided to continue my Kansas City Chalk and Walk Festival participation. This year the theme was Around the World. I thought long and hard about what I concept I would create for my 6'x8' chalk mural. I decided to take a spin off of the novel Around the World in Eighty Days by French writer Jules Verne. The novel plot went well with the theme (read about it here), and it would involve a vintage hot air balloon and some interesting Wonders of the World - which I loved! Of course, some of the kiddos didn't make the connection to the novel.. but their creative minds came up with all sorts of stories in regards to what the mural was about. I overheard reference to Oz the Great and Powerful the most. :) (Above Image) Photo credit: Jonathon Hackett, http://www.flickr.com/photos/nowheremanimages/ Not everyone noticed, but the hot air balloon carried a banner that read,
"The World is but a canvas to our imagination." ~ Henry David Thoreau YAY! Happy Birthday Sariah! I might spoil this little sweetie a bit... but you only turn ONE once, right!?! Sariah is my god daughter, so when she was getting ready to turn one I forced her mother to allow me to do a smash cake session with her. By force, I mean ask nicely. LOL! I created a custom tutu with matching headband, pink and cream rustic flag banner, collected rustic decor and created a vanilla cake with strawberry icing. YUM! SIDE NOTE: Sariah's big brother (Jaiden) said it was his FAVORITE cake. That made my day! :) It was the end of a beautiful hot summer day. The sun was setting and glistening through the trees. The light dancing on the leaves created the perfect setting! I think Sariah really enjoyed herself... what do you think? When we were looking for props I asked Sariah's mom to look for an old chair (above).
We found this adorable baby-sized one! As it turns out it's a chair that's been in their family for many years! All of the kids in the family had used it when they were little - Mommy included. :) Using little pieces of family history in portraits is a great way to add a personal touch that gives the photo a little extra meaning. |
